GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
GEO is the practice of structuring a website's content and technical setup so generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can accurately extract, cite, and recommend it.
GEO builds on the same technical and content foundation as SEO — site speed, clean HTML, and genuinely useful content — but adds AI-specific requirements: explicit structured data (JSON-LD schema), direct-answer paragraphs positioned immediately after headings, and technical access rules (robots.txt, llms.txt) that explicitly welcome AI crawlers rather than accidentally blocking them. A site can rank well in traditional Google search while being effectively invisible to AI assistants, which is why GEO is treated as a distinct discipline rather than an SEO afterthought.
