Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of some Google search results, answering the question directly and linking to the websites the answer draws on.

AI Overviews appear for many informational searches and some commercial ones. Instead of only a list of links, people see a short answer with cited sources, which means being one of those sources is becoming as important as ranking first.
Content is more likely to be cited when it answers questions directly and clearly, is well structured with headings and lists, is accurate and up to date, and comes from a source with clear expertise. Strong traditional SEO is still the foundation.
AI Overviews in practice
Someone searches "how much does a dental implant cost in Islamabad". An AI Overview summarises typical price factors and cites a clinic's page that answers the question directly, with a clear price range and what affects it. The clinic gets visibility even above the normal results.

Common questions about AI Overviews
Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
They can reduce clicks for simple questions, but being cited in an Overview can bring visibility and higher-intent visitors.
How do I get my website into AI Overviews?
There's no special tag. Rank well, answer questions directly near the top of the page, structure content clearly and keep it accurate.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Site owners can limit snippets with robots meta controls such as nosnippet, but that also limits how the page appears in normal results.
Is this the same as GEO?
AI Overviews are one of the AI search surfaces that generative engine optimisation, or GEO, aims to appear in, alongside tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
