ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)

An ICP is a detailed description of the type of company or customer that gets the most value from a product and is most likely to become a profitable, long-term customer.

An ICP typically includes firmographic details (company size, industry, revenue), technographic details (what tools they already use), and behavioral signals (what problems they’re actively searching for solutions to). A clearly defined ICP is the foundation for account-based marketing, outbound sales targeting, and even ad audience building — without it, campaigns tend to optimize for volume instead of fit.

ICP in practice

A B2B software company might define its ICP as private clinics and diagnostic labs with 10 to 100 staff, in Pakistan or the Gulf, already using a basic booking system and struggling to follow up on enquiries. Marketing then targets only businesses that match this description, and sales qualifies leads against it.

Common questions about ICP

What's the difference between an ICP and a buyer persona?

An ICP describes the type of company or customer to target, such as industry, size, budget and location. A buyer persona describes the individual person making or influencing the decision.

How do you build an ICP?

Look at your best existing customers: who paid the most, stayed longest and was easiest to serve. Then find what they have in common, and check it against lost deals.

How does an ICP improve marketing?

It focuses ad targeting, content and outreach on the customers most likely to buy and stay, which lowers wasted spend and acquisition cost.

How often should you update your ICP?

Review it at least once a year, and whenever you launch a new product or enter a new market. Your best current customers are the most reliable guide to who your ICP really is.
