Brand Identity

A brand identity is the set of visual and verbal elements that make a business recognisable, including its logo, colours, typography, imagery style and tone of voice.

A logo is only one part of a brand identity. The full identity includes colour palettes, fonts, layout styles, photography direction and the way the business writes, all documented in brand guidelines so anyone can apply them correctly.

Consistency is what makes an identity work. When a business looks and sounds the same on its signage, website, social media, ads and documents, customers recognise it faster and trust it more.

A brand identity in practice

A new private school creates a logo, a palette of two main colours and one accent, two fonts, photo guidelines showing real students and staff, and templates for social posts and admission forms. Every touchpoint now looks like the same, established school.

Common questions about brand identity

What's the difference between a brand and a brand identity?

A brand is how people perceive your business. A brand identity is the set of tools you use to shape that perception.

What's included in brand guidelines?

Logo usage rules, colours, typography, imagery style, tone of voice and examples of correct and incorrect use.

How long does it take to create a brand identity?

A logo and core identity often take two to four weeks; full guidelines and templates can take longer.

When should a business rebrand?

When the current identity no longer reflects the business, looks dated next to competitors, or causes confusion after growth or a change of direction.
