PPC Management Cost in 2026: USA, UK, Canada & Australia

The short answer
PPC has two costs: the ad budget you pay to Google, Microsoft, Meta or LinkedIn, and the management fee you pay an agency or freelancer. In 2025, Google Ads in the USA averaged $5.26 per click and $70.11 per lead, and agencies typically charge $500 to $2,500 a month or 10% to 20% of ad spend for small and mid-sized accounts. UK, Canadian and Australian clicks are often cheaper, but the number that matters most is your cost per customer, not per click.
What are you actually paying for?
PPC, or pay-per-click, means you pay each time someone clicks your ad. Your total cost has three parts:
- Ad spend. Paid directly to Google, Microsoft, Meta, LinkedIn, Amazon or TikTok. You control the daily or monthly budget.
- Management fee. Paid to an agency, freelancer or in-house specialist for strategy, setup and weekly optimisation.
- One-time setup. Often charged for the audit, conversion tracking, campaign structure and first ads.
Keep ad spend and management fees separate so you can always see what the ads themselves cost and what results they produce.
Average PPC costs in 2026
The most widely used benchmarks come from WordStream by LocaliQ, which analyses thousands of US Google Ads search campaigns each year. Its 2025 report found an average cost per click of $5.26, a conversion rate of 7.52% and a cost per lead of $70.11 across industries.
| Industry (US, 2025) | Avg cost per click | Avg conversion rate | Avg cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average across industries | $5.26 | 7.52% | $70.11 |
| Attorneys & legal services | $8.58 | - | $131.63 |
| Furniture | - | - | $121.51 |
| Business services | - | - | $103.54 |
| Dentists & dental services | $7.85 | - | - |
| Home & home improvement | $7.85 | - | - |
| Education & instruction | $6.23 | - | - |
| Animals & pets | - | - | $31.82 |
| Restaurants & food | - | - | $30.27 |
| Automotive repair & service | - | - | $28.50 |
These are averages. Your costs depend on your industry, location, competition and the quality of your ads and landing pages. A relevant ad pointing to a fast, focused page often pays less per click than a competitor bidding more, because Google's auction rewards relevance, measured partly by Quality Score.
How PPC costs differ in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia
- USA. Among the most expensive clicks in the world, especially in legal, insurance, healthcare and home services. Tight targeting and call tracking matter most here.
- UK. Often lower than the USA for many industries, but legal, finance and trades can still cost several pounds per click. Bing has around an 8% share of UK searches, so Microsoft Ads is worth testing.
- Canada. Costs vary by province and are often lower than in the USA. Campaigns aimed at Quebec usually need French ads.
- Australia. Costs vary widely by city and industry, with legal, trades and finance among the most competitive. Ad scheduling across time zones helps control spend.
Before committing, ask for keyword-level estimates from Google's Keyword Planner for your own services and locations. That's far more useful than any national average.
How do PPC agencies charge?
| Pricing model | Typical range | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat monthly fee | $500 to $2,500/month for small and mid-sized accounts | Predictable costs | Make sure the scope is clear |
| Percentage of ad spend | 10% to 20% of spend | Larger accounts | The fee rises when you spend more, not when you earn more |
| Setup fee | $500 to $5,000 one-time | Audit, tracking and campaign build | Ask what is actually included |
| Performance-based | Per lead or per sale | Very clear goals | Lead quality and who owns the accounts |
Whatever model you choose, make sure the ad accounts are set up in your name, so you keep the history and data if you ever change agency.
What should PPC management include?
- Conversion tracking for calls, forms, WhatsApp and purchases, set up before spending
- Keyword, competitor and audience research
- Campaign structure by service, product or location
- Ad copy and creative testing
- Weekly search-term reviews and negative keywords
- Bid and budget management towards your target CPA or ROAS
- Landing page recommendations
- Clear reporting on leads, sales and cost per lead, not just clicks
How much ad budget should you start with?
Work backwards from the results you want. If your expected cost per lead is $70 and you want 20 leads a month, plan for about $1,400 a month in ad spend, plus a few weeks of testing while campaigns learn. A budget that only buys a handful of clicks a day is usually too small to learn from.
Start with the platform closest to buying intent, usually Google Search, then add Microsoft Ads, Meta or LinkedIn once the first is profitable.
Google Ads vs Microsoft (Bing) Ads costs
Google has far more search volume, but Microsoft Advertising often has cheaper clicks because fewer advertisers compete there. Bing's share of all US searches was about 7.5% in 2025, and much higher on desktop, with an audience that skews older and higher income. For B2B and professional services in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia, running both usually lowers the average cost per lead.
How to tell if your PPC spend is worth it
- Is every lead or sale tracked back to a campaign and keyword?
- Is cost per lead or cost per sale falling, or at least stable, as spend grows?
- Do leads turn into customers? Ask your agency to report on outcomes, not only form fills.
- Are wasted searches being removed every week?
- Do you own the accounts and data?
Frequently asked questions
How much does PPC management cost per month?
Most small and mid-sized businesses pay a management fee of roughly $500 to $2,500 a month, or 10% to 20% of ad spend, plus their ad budget, which is paid directly to Google, Microsoft, Meta or LinkedIn.
What is the average cost per click in 2026?
Across industries, Google Ads search campaigns in the USA averaged $5.26 per click in 2025, according to WordStream by LocaliQ. Legal, dental and home services are among the most expensive categories.
Is PPC cheaper in the UK, Canada or Australia than in the USA?
Often, yes, for many industries, but competitive sectors such as legal, finance and trades can still be expensive. Always check estimates for your own keywords and locations.
Should I pay a flat fee or a percentage of ad spend?
A flat fee is predictable and doesn't reward the agency for spending more of your money. A percentage can suit large accounts. Whichever you choose, make sure you own the ad accounts.
How much ad budget do I need to start PPC?
Enough to get several leads or sales a week. Work backwards from your cost per lead: at $70 per lead, 20 leads a month needs about $1,400 a month in ad spend.
Are Microsoft (Bing) Ads cheaper than Google Ads?
Clicks on Microsoft Advertising are often cheaper because fewer advertisers compete there, and Bing's audience skews older and higher income. It's worth testing alongside Google in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia.
