Performance Max (PMax)
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that uses automation to show your ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single campaign, aimed at your conversion goals.

You give Performance Max your goals, budget, creative assets such as headlines, images and videos, and audience signals. Google's systems then decide where and when to show ads to get the most conversions or conversion value.
It works best with accurate conversion tracking and enough conversion data. Without them, it can spend budget on low-quality placements, so it needs clear goals, brand exclusions where appropriate and regular review of results.
Performance Max in practice
An online furniture store connects its product feed and runs Performance Max with a return-on-ad-spend target. Google shows products in Shopping, YouTube and Display, and the store reviews which asset groups and products drive profitable sales.

Common questions about Performance Max
Is Performance Max good for lead generation?
It can be, but it needs accurate lead tracking, ideally with lead quality data from your CRM. Otherwise it may optimise for cheap, low-quality form fills.
Does Performance Max replace Search campaigns?
Not always. Many advertisers keep Search campaigns for core keywords and use Performance Max alongside them.
How much budget does Performance Max need?
Enough to generate regular conversions so the system can learn. Very small budgets often perform inconsistently.
Can I see where Performance Max shows ads?
Partly. Reporting has improved, with channel and search term insights, but it's still less transparent than a standard Search campaign.
