GEO
How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews

What is GEO, in one sentence?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website’s content and technical setup so AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can accurately extract, cite, and recommend your business when someone asks a relevant question.
Why this matters now
Search behavior is splitting into two paths: traditional keyword search, and conversational queries asked directly to an AI assistant. If your site is optimized only for the first path, you’re invisible on the second — even if you’d be a perfect answer to the question being asked.
The technical foundation
Three things need to be true before any content strategy matters:
- AI crawlers need to be allowed in. Many sites accidentally block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot in
robots.txtwithout realizing it. Check yours. - Your content needs to be readable without JavaScript execution. Most AI crawlers fetch raw HTML — if your key content only renders after a client-side script runs, it’s invisible to them.
- Structured data needs to be present. JSON-LD schema (Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article) gives AI systems an unambiguous, machine-readable version of what your page is about.
The content structure that works
AI systems extract answers, not vibes. Every page that wants to be cited should have:
- A single, clear heading (H1) stating exactly what the page is about
- A direct-answer paragraph immediately after that heading — two or three sentences that could be read aloud as a complete answer to “what is X”
- Supporting detail organized under clear subheadings, not buried in marketing copy
- An FAQ section addressing the specific questions people actually ask, marked up with FAQPage schema
A quick self-test
Open an AI assistant and ask it a question your business should be a good answer to. If you’re not mentioned, work backward: is your content structured to be extracted? Is your site technically accessible to AI crawlers? Is there a canonical page directly answering that exact question?
This is precisely how we built the ZAVYANS site — every service page follows this structure. If you want a second pair of eyes on your own site, that’s what our GEO / AI Search Optimization service is for.
What AI assistants actually pull from
AI assistants draw on a mix of their training data, real-time search results, and increasingly, structured data and clearly-written content that directly answers a question. Content written as a direct, well-structured answer to a specific question is far more likely to be cited than a page that talks around a topic without ever stating a clear position.
The technical foundation that helps
- FAQPage and Article schema markup, which gives AI crawlers a structured version of your content to parse.
- An llms.txt file, a growing convention that helps AI crawlers understand what your site covers.
- Making sure AI crawlers (like GPTBot and ClaudeBot) are not blocked in your robots.txt, a surprisingly common accidental mistake.
- Fast, crawlable pages, since a page an AI crawler cannot load cannot be cited.
The content pattern that gets cited
Answer the question directly in the first sentence or two, then explain. This is the exact pattern our own blog posts use, and it is the same pattern we implement for clients under our GEO and AI Search Optimization service.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?
Make sure AI crawlers aren't blocked, that your key content is readable in the page's HTML without JavaScript, and that each page has a clear heading, a direct-answer paragraph, FAQs and structured data.
Do AI crawlers need to be allowed in robots.txt?
Yes. Many sites accidentally block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot in robots.txt, which stops them reading your content at all.
How can I test whether AI assistants recommend my business?
Ask an AI assistant a question your business should be a good answer to. If you're not mentioned, check whether a page on your site directly answers that exact question and whether AI crawlers can access it.
