AI Overviews
How Google AI Overviews Choose Their Sources

The short answer
Google says there is no special markup or secret file for AI Overviews. The pages they link to are ones that are indexed, eligible to show a snippet, and helpful for the question. AI features may also run several related searches behind the scenes to find supporting pages. So the practical route is strong SEO fundamentals, clear answer-first content, accurate structured data and trusted signals.
What Google has said publicly
- To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
- There are no additional technical requirements, and you do not need a special file, markup or AI-specific text.
- Google's AI features can use a technique called query fan-out, running multiple related searches across subtopics to gather sources.
- Standard Search policies and quality guidance apply, including helpful, people-first content.
What this means in practice
- Be indexed first. Check Search Console for pages that are discovered or crawled but not indexed, and fix thin or duplicate pages.
- Answer the question directly. Put a short, accurate answer near the top, then add detail, examples and sources.
- Cover related sub-questions. Because AI features search across subtopics, a page or cluster that answers the follow-up questions has more chances to be used.
- Keep facts consistent. Names, addresses, prices and descriptions should match across your site and profiles.
- Use structured data that matches the page. Schema helps Google understand the page, but it must reflect visible content.
- Show real experience. Case studies, named authors, dates and sources signal trust.
For local and service businesses
For queries like "digital marketing agency in Islamabad", AI answers often draw on Google Business Profile information, reviews and local pages. A complete, verified profile with the right category, accurate address, phone number and hours, plus real reviews, supports both map results and AI answers.
How to check whether you are being used
- Search the questions your customers ask, in the country and city you serve.
- See whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it links to.
- Check Search Console performance reports for those queries.
- Repeat monthly and note changes after you improve a page.
Our GEO and AI search service does this testing for you across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot.
Frequently asked questions
Can I opt in to AI Overviews?
There is no separate opt-in. Pages that are indexed and eligible for snippets can be used. You can limit snippets with controls such as nosnippet, but that also reduces your normal search appearance.
Does schema markup guarantee I'm cited?
No. Structured data helps Google understand a page, but it is not a requirement or a guarantee for AI features.
Do I need an llms.txt file for Google?
Google has not said it uses llms.txt for AI Overviews. Some other AI tools may read it, and it is harmless to include, but do not expect it to replace normal SEO.
Why do AI Overviews cite pages that rank lower?
Because AI features look at subtopics and supporting pages, not only the top-ranked result for the exact query, a well-targeted page can be cited even when it does not hold position one.
How long until my page is used?
Once a page is indexed it can be eligible, but being chosen depends on the question and the competition. Improve and re-test monthly.
