What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? A Plain Guide

The short answer

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the practice of making your business easy for AI answer tools to find, understand and cite. Instead of competing for a position in a list of links, you compete to be named inside a written answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot or Gemini. It builds on SEO and adds clear answer-first content, structured data, trusted third-party mentions and consistent business facts.

What GEO means in plain language

When someone asks an AI assistant, "who is the best marketing agency in Islamabad?" or "how much does an AI receptionist cost?", the assistant writes an answer and often names a few businesses. GEO is the work of being one of those names. The term was popularised by a 2023 research paper on generative engines, and it is used alongside AEO (answer engine optimization), which focuses on being the direct answer to a question.

How AI assistants decide who to mention

Different assistants use different sources, so GEO covers several places at once:

  • ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are widely reported to lean on Bing's index for web results, so being indexed in Bing matters.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's own index and pages that are eligible to appear with a snippet.
  • Perplexity runs its own search and cites the pages it used, so clear, quotable pages and third-party mentions help.
  • Claude and others use whichever search provider their web tool connects to.

In every case, the assistant tends to prefer pages that state facts clearly, agree with other sources about who you are, and come from sites that other trusted sites mention.

What GEO work actually includes

  • Answer-first pages: a short, direct answer at the top of each page, followed by detail.
  • Structured data: schema markup for your organisation, services, FAQs and locations, so machines read the page correctly.
  • Crawl access: allowing search and AI crawlers in robots.txt, and submitting sitemaps to Google and Bing.
  • Consistent facts: the same name, address, phone, prices and service descriptions everywhere you appear.
  • Third-party proof: reviews and profiles on sites such as Clutch, Google Business Profile and industry directories.
  • Published prices and specifics: assistants can only recommend you on price or detail if that information is written down.
  • Measurement: testing the questions your customers ask across assistants every month and tracking where you appear.

What GEO cannot do

No one can guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will recommend a business. The assistants change how they work, and they weigh sources in ways that are not published. Anyone promising guaranteed AI rankings is overselling. What GEO does is remove the common reasons you are skipped, such as missing pages in Bing, vague descriptions, no reviews and conflicting business details, and then measure the result.

Where to start this week

  1. Write a two-sentence answer to "what does your business do and where?" and put it at the top of your homepage and main service pages.
  2. Add organisation and FAQ schema, and check your robots.txt does not block search or AI crawlers.
  3. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  4. Make your business name, address, phone and prices identical on your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings.
  5. Ask real customers for reviews on the platforms buyers trust.
  6. Test ten real customer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, write down who is named, and repeat monthly.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: optimizing your content and online presence so that generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot can find, understand and cite your business.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap. AEO, answer engine optimization, focuses on being the direct answer to a question. GEO is broader and covers being cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers. In practice the work is largely the same.

How long does GEO take to work?

Technical fixes such as indexing and structured data can be done in weeks, but AI assistants rely on trust signals like reviews and third-party mentions that build over months. Expect measurable change over one to three months, not days.

Do small local businesses need GEO?

Yes, if customers ask AI tools for local recommendations. Clear facts, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews and a crawlable website matter even more for local businesses.

Can I do GEO myself?

Many of the basics, such as clear pages, consistent details and review requests, you can do yourself. An agency helps most with technical set-up, structured data, measurement and building third-party mentions.
