Performance Marketing

What Is Performance Marketing? A Framework, Not a Buzzword

The short answer

Performance marketing isn't a platform or a channel — it's a way of running paid media where every dollar is measured against one shared outcome (usually cost-per-acquisition or ROAS), and budget moves toward whatever is hitting that number, regardless of which platform it's on. Most businesses that say they "do performance marketing" are actually just running Google Ads and Meta Ads as two separate accounts with two separate goals, which isn't the same thing.

What it's not

It's not a synonym for "paid ads." Running a Google Search campaign optimized for clicks, and a Meta campaign optimized for reach, in the same month, isn't performance marketing even if both are technically "performance" in the loose sense — because nothing is tying them to one number. It's also not something you can do without conversion tracking that actually works; you can't optimize toward a CAC target you can't measure accurately.

The three things that actually make it "performance"

  1. One shared target across platforms. Google, Meta, and TikTok all get measured against the same CAC or ROAS number, not platform-specific proxies like reach or click-through rate.
  2. Accurate, server-side conversion data. Conversions API, Enhanced Conversions, and equivalent server-side tracking so each platform's bidding algorithm is working from real data, not a broken pixel.
  3. Budget that actually moves. If Meta is beating its CAC target and Google isn't this week, budget shifts — not next quarter, this week.

Why single-platform "performance marketing" is a contradiction

If you're only running one platform, you don't have a performance marketing system — you have a media buying tactic. The entire value of the "performance" framing is deciding where the next dollar goes based on evidence, and you can't make that decision with only one option on the table. This is also where a lot of agencies quietly fall short: they're excellent at one platform and call the whole engagement "performance marketing" anyway.

Where this breaks down

Performance marketing without a real CAC or ROAS ceiling just becomes an excuse to spend more. The number has to come from your actual margins and average order value, set before the campaigns launch, not backed into after the fact to justify the spend.

This is exactly how we run Performance Marketing engagements — one team, one target, across Google, Meta, and TikTok.

Performance marketing versus brand marketing

Brand marketing builds awareness and recall over time, and is genuinely hard to measure in the short term. Performance marketing is judged on direct, trackable outcomes, leads, sales, bookings, within a defined period. Most growing businesses need more performance marketing early on, since it is what pays for itself and funds everything else, with brand work becoming more valuable as the business matures.

Why one framework across channels matters

Running Meta, Google and TikTok as separate campaigns, each judged on its own metrics, often means budget stays wherever it started rather than moving to what is actually working. A single performance framework, one target (like cost per qualified lead), measured consistently across every channel, lets you compare them honestly and move budget to whichever is producing results this month.

Common mistakes we see

  • Judging a new channel on its first two weeks, before it has had time to optimise.
  • Comparing channels on different metrics (impressions on one, sales on another) instead of one shared measure.
  • Scaling budget on a channel before conversion tracking is properly verified.

Frequently asked questions

What is performance marketing?

A way of running paid media where every platform is measured against one shared target, usually cost per acquisition or ROAS, and budget moves to whatever is hitting it.

Is performance marketing the same as paid ads?

No. Running Google and Meta campaigns with separate goals isn't performance marketing. It needs one shared target, accurate conversion tracking and budget that actually moves.

What tracking does performance marketing need?

Accurate, server-side conversion data, such as Meta's Conversions API and Google's Enhanced Conversions, so each platform's bidding works from real results.
