Shopify vs. WooCommerce: How to Actually Choose

Ibrahim, Head of Engineering & AI

The short answer

Shopify suits most businesses that want a managed, scalable platform with less technical overhead and predictable hosting costs. WooCommerce suits businesses that want full control over their stack and are already comfortable managing WordPress, typically because of very specific customization needs or existing WordPress infrastructure.

Where Shopify wins

Shopify handles hosting, security, and platform updates for you, and its app ecosystem covers most common e-commerce needs without custom development. For businesses that want to focus on running the store rather than maintaining infrastructure, this trade-off is usually worth the platform fees.

Where WooCommerce wins

Because WooCommerce runs on your own WordPress hosting, you have full control over the codebase, no platform transaction fees beyond your payment processor, and complete flexibility for custom functionality. This comes with more responsibility for hosting, security, and updates — which either means investing internal technical resources or relying on ongoing external support.

The question that actually decides it

Not “which platform has more features” — both cover the basics well. The real question is whether you want to trade some control and pay a platform fee for reduced technical overhead (Shopify), or take on more technical responsibility in exchange for full control and no per-transaction platform fees (WooCommerce). Store complexity, internal technical capacity, and growth plans all factor into that trade-off.

We scope this decision as the first step in every E-commerce Development engagement, based on your specific catalog and growth plans rather than a default recommendation.
